The unpaid internship program at UMWC is intended to be a continuation of one’s educational training by experiencing hands on learning focused on providing healthcare, food, and shelter to those in need.

  • The application period for Summer 2021 begins March 1, 2021
    • Applications are due by April 1, 2021
    • You will be notified of the decisions in May
  • All internships are unpaid
  • The summer internship period is 5/24/21–7/30/21
  • Clinic applicants can choose a single semester or double semester. If you choose a double semester, the period would end 12/10/21. Please indicate your choice in your cover letter. Application instructions are under the “Application Process” section.
  • Personal transportation (we are not directly on a bus line)

Food Pantry Intern

This individual will learn how our food pantry operates from food sourcing to distribution to clients. We feed as many as 50 families each weekday and last year, we distributed 270 tons of food and served more than 20,000 adults and 10,000 hungry children. Interns will learn about hunger and nutrition opportunities, our client-choice pantry and food insecurity.

Responsibilities
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Assist clients during the food item selection process; help them optimize nutritional choices
  • Provide operational support to Food Pantry Manager
  • Special projects depending on skills and experience, and need
  • Ability to lift 25-40 lbs. without assistance

Access to Care Intern

The Access to Care Intern will interact with our diverse patient population to assist them in obtaining access to medical care such as medicals visits, free medications and referrals. This position allows you to interact one-on-one with our patients, get to know their stories and assist them in bettering their health with the smallest gestures. You will assist with the check-in process, schedule appointments, update patient records, conduct interviews and educate patients on our policies and procedures.

Responsibilities
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Assisting with checking in clients for their appointments and clinic flow
  • Scheduling appointments with prospective and current patients
  • Conduct one-on-one interviews with current and prospective patients
  • Educating patients on the policies and requirements to continue receiving services in the Open Door Clinic
  • Assisting the Access to Care team with tasks as assigned

Clinic Assistant Intern

The Clinic Assistant Intern serves as an integral member of our clinical team, ensuring patients receive continuous communication with our clinic. This individual will be physically located in the middle of the clinic, allowing the opportunity to observe and help clinical staff as need be. This individual’s main responsibilities will be calling patients to address any scheduling or clinical needs, checking patients out for telehealth visits, and communicating with clinical staff regarding the patients’ care plans. Due to the pandemic, majority of patient communication is conducted over the phone, thus emphasizing the importance of the Clinic Assistant Intern as our phone lines have become significantly busier.

Patient Care Services Intern

The Patient Care Services Intern will help with scheduling imaging and specialty referrals with doctors’ offices.

  • Scan, properly name, and upload documents into patient’s Electronic Medical Records (EMR)

Clinic Scribe Intern

The Clinic Scribe Intern serves a vital role for our providers, ensuring accurate and complete documentation of patient encounters. As a Clinic Scribe Intern, you will actively support our medical providers in the use of Electronic Medical Records (EMR) program.

Responsibilities (include, but are not limited to:)

  • Interns are expected to be available for two 4 hour shifts a week.
  • One shift is usually focused on provider/patient contact and one shift is usually dedicated to lab data entry.
  • Interns will assist providers in recording patient encounters in the Athena EMR system, including clinical notes, orders and follow-up instructions
  • Assist with lab data entry so that results can be tracked over time.
  • Access electronic documents, orders and lab results within the EMR.
  • Expectation of flexibility in learning EMR and may be working with different providers during scribe shift.
  • Familiarity with medical terminology and anatomy preferable.
  • May also be engaged in assisting with additional record-keeping or population study projects.

Available Shifts:

Clinic Scribe Intern schedule shifts are very specific. Please include any shifts you are available in your cover letter and you will be assigned one shift per week in your offer email. All scribes will also work one remote shift conducting lab data entry ( 2 /3-4 hours shifts per week, 7-8 hours total)

Monday – 9am–1pm / 1–5pm

Tuesday – 9am–1pm / 1–5pm / 5-9pm*

Wednesday – 9am–1pm / 1–5pm

Thursday – 9am–1pm / 1–5pm

*Limited evening shifts are available at present but may increase as COVID-19 protocols permit expansion of our evening clinic capacity.

**Scribe Interns must be available for additional training after the Internship Orientation. During COVID-19 this may be conducted as a ZOOM meeting. Also expect some on-site training as the internship begins. This is a mandatory requirement for the Scribe Internship; please confirm your ability to attend both the orientation and training session in your cover letter.

 

Medical Director Intern

The Medical Director Intern will work alongside our Medical Director, Dr. Elizabeth Campbell, to coordinate patient care and conduct clinic initiatives. This position will allow you to see both the patient-care side of the clinic as well as the business side. The Medical Director Intern will support the Medical Director, providers, and patients in this role.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Assisting with the onboarding of volunteer providers
  • Communicating and coordinating volunteer provider schedules
  • Assisting the COVID Case Manager with daily tasks
  • Assisting the Medical Director with daily tasks
  • Ensuring clinic procedures meet various regulatory requirements
  • Assist in patient survey administration
  • Assisting in the pharmacy as needed

Available Shifts:

Monday-Thursday between the hours of 9am-5pm. 20-32 hours/week preferred but not required.

 

Business Quality Improvement Intern

The Business Quality Improvement Intern will assist the Clinic Director in Quality Improvement Initiatives. The Business Quality Improvement Intern is vital to the continued growth and improvement of the clinic. Business Interns will work with various organizations (consultants) as well as all departments within the clinic to evaluate clinic operations/initiatives and suggest improvements and processes to build efficiencies and increase capacity.

Business Administration, Healthcare Administration, Business Strategy and Problem solving,

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Meeting with Clinic Coordinator and consultants to discuss best ways to implement quality improvement initiatives within the clinic
  • Work with all departments in the clinic to evaluate their processes and propose ways to improve these processes and work flows
  • Work alongside the Clinic Coordinator and Director to identify, implement, and evaluate clinic initiatives

Available Shifts:

Monday-Thursday between the hours of 9am-5pm. 16 hours/week preferred

Medication Assistance Program Intern

The Medication Assistance Program Intern will assist the Medication Assistance Program Coordinator and the pharmacist in ordering medications for clinic patients. As an intern, you will help ensure a continuous supply of medication for the Open Door Clinic Pharmacy. Intern will help with the re-order of medications from pharmaceutical companies and track medication requests online through The Pharmacy Connection (TPC). TPC is the program used to track the status of all patients’ PAP medications.

  • Assist pharmacy staff with unpacking medication orders, monitoring inventory and general pharmacy operations
  • Provide assistance with other special projects as deemed appropriate

Available Shifts:
Medication Assistance Program Intern schedule shifts are flexible between the hours of Monday -Thursday 9am–6 pm. Please include any availability in your cover letter and you will be assigned 2-3 regular shifts per week in your offer email.

Clinic Director Intern

  • The Clinic Director Intern will work alongside our Clinic Director, Dr. Lucy Vidal Barreto, in various projects and initiatives. These include among others, quality improvement initiatives, Clinic onsite events coordination (COVID 19 and flu vaccination), reports, surveys, telehealth and Clinic activities logistics, revising clinic’s standard operating procedures, accreditation efforts and others. As an intern, you will gain experience in healthcare management related work and will play a valuable role in helping our Clinic achieve a high standard of care and efficiencies to better serve our patient population.  Scribing opportunities will also be available to enhance the internship and provide the intern the patient care experience aspect of the Clinic.

  • Coordinate and assist on quality improvement initiatives

  • Help to maintain a high standard of care through clinical and administrative projects

Pharmacy Intern

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities include the following:

  1. Accurately count and label medications in accordance with state pharmacy law.
  2. Check in and process medication packages and orders received from the Patient Assistance Program, Direct Relief, AmeriCares, Quest Pharmaceuticals and Henry Schein.
  3. Maintain accurate inventory in pharmacy software program. Notify staff of any discrepancies discovered.
  4. Assist in the collection, organization, and removal of expired medications.
  5. Scan and upload pharmacy documents (prescriptions/refill sheets) into EHR system.
  6. Assist in curbside medication delivery.

 

Available Shifts:

Minimum of 10 hours a week. Monday-Thursday 9am-12pm or 1-4pm with flexibility.

Qualifications and Education:

High school diploma and minimum two years of college required.

Bilingual English/Spanish preferred, but not required.

Preference given to candidate pursuing a career in pharmacy or healthcare.

Finance Intern

This individual will support the Finance Director with all aspects of Non-Profit Finance and Accounting. Candidates should be comfortable using Excel.

Responsibilities
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Assist with Accounts Payable activities
  • Assist with logging deposits from various revenue sources, such as Facebook
  • Assist with gathering the financial data needed for grant submissions
  • Assist with submitting grant payment requests to various government agencies
  • Gain experience working in QuickBooks
  • Gain exposure to all aspects of working in a Non-Profit environment

Volunteer Department Intern

The Volunteer Services department is responsible for recruiting and retaining a corps of volunteers that is vital to the operations of Urban Ministries. This individual will support the Manager of Volunteer Services with database management and special projects. In return, Urban Ministries of Wake County will provide an opportunity for the intern to gain valuable, real work experience with volunteer management, day-to-day activities and project activities of a nonprofit organization.

  • Develop, implement, and analyze volunteer surveys to get feedback on volunteer motivations and experience
  • Create content for all volunteer emails

  • Create infographics on volunteer information for the leadership team
  • Update volunteer database with current volunteer information, pictures, holiday graphics, etc.
  • Make improvements to the volunteer application
  • Learn various volunteer roles such as Front Desk Greeter and Food Pantry volunteer
