An internship at Urban Ministries of Wake County means helping to provide food, shelter and healing to those in need while earning valuable experience. Internships are available in the following departments: Fundraising, Volunteer Services, our Hunger and Nutrition program and our Open Door Clinic.

  • The application period for Spring 2021 begins October 1, 2020
    • Applications are due by November 13, 2020
    • You will be notified of the decisions on (or before) December 14, 2020
  • All internships are unpaid
  • The internship period is 1/11/20–5/7/21
  • Clinic applicants can choose a single semester or double (period would be 5/24/21–7/30/21.) Please indicate your choice in your cover letter.
  • Personal transportation (we are not directly on a bus line)

Development & Marketing Intern

This individual will support fundraising initiatives through relationship development with groups including, but not limited to civic groups, congregations and food drive donors. Duties also include an emphasis on data entry and analysis, as well as event planning and marketing activities, particularly where it applies to community outreach. Candidates must be comfortable in Excel.

Responsibilities
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Research and track opportunities for community engagement
  • Administrative support including database updates, mailings and special projects as needed
  • Support the execution and marketing of fundraising events; including vendor management, social media content and media advisories.

Social Work Intern

* This intern will report to the Helen Wright Center for Women which is located at 3603 Bastion Lane.

Social work interns will report to the Program Manager. Shelter clients will be assigned and required to meet with a social work intern. The intern will perform case management activities which will include, but are not limited to:

  • Assess household and individual client needs
  • Determine the best plan of action to address needs
  • Provide counseling
  • Facilitate access to the services and available resources necessary for self-sufficiency and housing stabilization
  • Follow up to ensure that client referrals were completed
  • Tracking and documenting client progress

Food Pantry Intern

This individual will learn how our food pantry operates from food sourcing to distribution to clients. We feed as many as 50 families each weekday and last year, we distributed 270 tons of food and served more than 20,000 adults and 10,000 hungry children. Interns will learn about hunger and nutrition opportunities, our client-choice pantry and food insecurity.

  • Assist clients during the food item selection process; help them optimize nutritional choices
  • Provide operational support to Food Pantry Manager
  • Special projects depending on skills and experience, and need
  • Ability to lift 25-40 lbs. without assistance

Access to Care Intern

The Access to Care Intern will interact with our diverse patient population to assist them in obtaining access to medical care such as medicals visits, free medications and referrals. This position allows you to interact one-on-one with our patients, get to know their stories and assist them in bettering their health with the smallest gestures. You will assist with the check-in process, schedule appointments, update patient records, conduct interviews and educate patients on our policies and procedures.

Responsibilities
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Assisting with checking in clients for their appointments and clinic flow
  • Scheduling appointments with prospective and current patients
  • Conduct one-on-one interviews with current and prospective patients
  • Educating patients on the policies and requirements to continue receiving services in the Open Door Clinic
  • Assisting the Access to Care team with tasks as assigned

Clinic Assistant Intern

The Clinic Assistant Intern serves an integral member of our clinical team, ensuring patients move through the clinic efficiently and effectively. This individual will be physically located in the middle of the clinic, allowing the opportunity to observe and help direct the flow of patients and providers in an outpatient setting. This individual’s main responsibility will be checking patients out, communicating with providers regarding the patients’ care plans and advising patients on their next steps.

Patient Care Services Intern

The Patient Care Services Intern will help with scheduling imaging and specialty referrals with doctors’ offices.

Clinic Scribe Intern

The Clinic Scribe Intern serves a vital role for our providers, ensuring accurate and complete documentation of patient encounters. As a Clinic Scribe Intern, you will actively support our medical providers in the use of Electronic Medical Records (EMR) program.

  • Review and process Medical Records requests
  • Creating patient encounters in the EMR system, including clinical notes and discharge instructions
  • Entering provider orders for vaccines and laboratory

  • Familiarity with EMR programs a plus

Medication Assistance Program Intern

The Patient Assistance Program Intern will assist the Patient Assistance Program Coordinator and the pharmacist in ordering medications for clinic patients. As an intern, you will help ensure a continuous supply of medication for the Open Door Clinic Pharmacy. Intern will help with the re-order of medications from pharmaceutical companies and track medication requests online through The Pharmacy Connection (TPC). TPC is the program used to track the status of all patients’ PAP medications.

  • Assist pharmacy staff with unpacking medication orders, monitoring inventory and general pharmacy operations

Clinic Director Intern

The Clinic Director Intern will work alongside our clinic director, Lucy Vidal-Barreto, to develop the clinic’s standard operating procedures and construct quality improvement initiatives. As an intern, you will gain experience in healthcare administrative work and will play a valuable role in helping our clinic achieve a high standard of care through quality improvement tasks and projects.

Schedule:

Pharmacy Intern

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities include the following:

  1. Accurately count and label medications in accordance with state pharmacy law.
  2. Check in and process medication packages and orders received from the Patient Assistance Program, Direct Relief, AmeriCares, Quest Pharmaceuticals and Henry Schein.
  3. Maintain accurate inventory in pharmacy software program. Notify staff of any discrepancies discovered.
  4. Assist in the collection, organization, and removal of expired medications.
  5. Scan and upload pharmacy documents (prescriptions/refill sheets) into EHR system.
  6. Assist in curbside medication delivery.

 

Schedule:

Minimum of 10 hours a week. Monday-Thursday 9am-12pm or 1-4pm with flexibility.

Qualifications and Education:

High school diploma and minimum two years of college required.

Bilingual English/Spanish preferred, but not required.

Preference given to candidate pursuing a career in pharmacy or healthcare.

Non-profit Finance Intern

Finance and Operations Intern

  • Assist with Accounts Payable activities
  • Assist with logging deposits from various revenue sources, such as FaceBook
  • Assist with gathering the financial data needed for grant submissions
  • Assist with submitting grant payment requests to various government agencies
  • Get experience with QuickBooks
  • Learn facility operations and management skills
  • Gain exposure to all aspects of working in a Non Profit environment

Volunteer Department Intern

The Volunteer Services department is responsible for recruiting and retaining a corps of volunteers that is vital to the operations of Urban Ministries. This individual will support the Manager of Volunteer Services with database management and special projects. In return, Urban Ministries of Wake County will provide an opportunity for the intern to gain valuable, real work experience with volunteer management, day-to-day activities and project activities of a nonprofit organization.

  • Develop, implement, and analyze volunteer surveys to get feedback on volunteer motivations and experience
  • Create content for all volunteer emails
  • Interview and write stories on volunteers for Group Facebook page
  • Create infographics on volunteer information for the leadership team
  • Update volunteer database with current volunteer information, pictures, holiday graphics, etc.
  • Make improvements to the volunteer application
  • Learn various volunteer roles such as Front Desk Greeter and Food Pantry volunteer
