At Urban Ministries, we believe that compassion in action is what keeps our mission alive, and our volunteers are the living proof. From longtime helpers to first-time groups, every hand that packs a bag, greets a client, serves a meal or gives their time brings light into someone’s life. This month, we’re highlighting a few of the incredible people and partners who remind us what community really looks like.
Rose, in the Pantry
Rose first connected with us through her volunteer work at the Under One Roof AIDS Clinic, where she’s served for over a year. She’s been with Urban Ministries for nine months now and has quickly become a calming and joyful presence. What keeps her coming back? “I like when the gardeners come and serving fresh produce and the long lines. It makes me feel like I have purpose.” And we’re so glad she’s found that purpose here with us.
Anna, in the Pantry
Anna is a steady, kind presence in our food pantry. She says her favorite part of volunteering is “being active in the community, serving families, and taking the weight off their shoulders.” Her care shows in every interaction, and the impact she makes is felt by everyone she helps. We’re grateful to have her as part of the team.
North Raleigh United Methodist Church, in the Pantry
This thoughtful congregation hosted a special event where their members decorated food pantry bags with encouraging messages and colorful designs. These small works of art are tokens of care that brighten the days of everyone who receives them. We’re so thankful for their creative support and genuine spirit of giving.
The Altrusa Group, at the HWCW & the Pantry
This powerhouse volunteer group came in ready to serve—and they never disappoint. The dedicated group has been volunteering with us for years, supporting both the food pantry and the Helen Wright Center for Women. Altrusa shows up with heart, consistency, and care. We’re especially excited to have marked their volunteer anniversary this month. What a perfect way to honor Volunteer Appreciation Month!
The World Centers Church, at the Helen Wright Center
Their team brought so much heart to the Helen Wright Center for Women by preparing a full meal entirely from scratch. Using the on-site kitchen, they cooked everything with care and intention, creating not just a delicious meal but a meaningful moment for the women we serve. We’re so grateful for their generosity and for reminding us how powerful a shared meal can be.
Barbara & Mary, in the ODC
These two are the dynamic duo of the food pantry. Barbara and Mary show up consistently, always with smiles and laughter in tow. They help keep things running smoothly and lift everyone’s spirits in the process. Their friendship and teamwork are a beautiful example of how volunteering connects us to each other.
Elizabeth, in the Pantry
For the past 5 months, Elizabeth has brought a gentle, thoughtful energy to her volunteer work. She shows deep empathy toward the people we serve and contributes meaningfully behind the scenes. Her quiet strength is felt across the pantry floor—and it makes a difference every time she’s here. A psychotherapist by trade, she first discovered us after going through a divorce and looking for a way to reconnect and give back. “I’m so grateful for you,” she says. The feeling is mutual!
Every person and group in this spotlight gives more than their time—they give their heart. These are the stories of service, joy, and humanity that fuel our work every day. To all of our volunteers: thank you for standing with us.
